Indexing change effective January 1, 2010

Beginning January 1, 2010, the Marin County Recorder's Office will not abbreviate any word written into the Grantor/Grantee index. All words will appear in the index as written on the recorded document. If the document contains an abbreviation, the index will contain the same abbreviation. This change also applies to the middle names of individuals which were previously truncated to initials. This change does not affect documents indexed prior to January 1, 2010.

A maximum of 160 records will be returned per search. If you don't see the record you were looking for, narrow the scope of your search criteria.

Datepicker Keyboard Tips
While the datepicker is open, the following keyboard commands are available:
- LEFT: Move to the day before the selected date.
- RIGHT: Move to the day after the selected date.
- UP: Move to the week before the selected date.
- DOWN: Move to the week after the selected date.
- HOME: Move to the first day of the selected week.
- END: Move to the last day of the selected week.
- PAGE UP: Move to the month before the selected date.
- PAGE DOWN: Move to the month after the selected date.
- SHIFT + PAGE UP: Move to the year before the selected date.
- SHIFT + PAGE DOWN: Move to the year after the selected date.
- ESCAPE: Close the datepicker and discard the selected date.
- ENTER: Close the datepicker and use the selected date.

Searches can take 10 or more seconds depending on the criteria used.

How to Search by Name

Official Records are indexed by name only – you cannot search by property address or assessor parcel number (APN).
When entering last names of individuals, please use the following guidelines:
- O'Connor is entered as O CONNOR.
- McDonald is entered as MC DONALD.
- MacDonald is entered as MAC DONALD.
- Macdonald is entered as MACDONALD.
Hyphenated names (i.e. SMITH-JONES) should be entered with the hyphen.
Company names should be entered in the "Last Name" box (i.e. MC DONALDS CORP)
Company names containing "and" should be entered with an ampersand ("&"):
- Smart and Final is entered as SMART & FINAL.
Entries are not case sensitive.

How to Search by Document Number

To search by document number, enter the 4-digit year followed by seven digits. The document number may appear in one of the following formats:

3. By Book and Page

How to Search by Book and Page

For the Book field enter up to 4 digits.

For the Page field enter up to 3 digits.

Entry of both fields is required to view a document.

4. By Document Title

How to Search by Document Title

Select a type of document from the dropdown.

Then select the start and end dates for the search. A missing end date will default to today's date.

This online search of the Recorder's Official Records includes documents recorded since 1/2/1973.

Documents recorded prior to 1973 may be viewed in Room 232 in the Marin Civic Center.
